I-Wen Chen, born in Tainan and now residing in Taipei, began exploring photography during her university years. Her early works often employed self-portraiture as a means of delving into themes of self-identity, societal roles, and challenges in adaptation. Deeply attuned to the interplay between the human body and its environment, her focus gradually expanded with an introduction to contemporary photography. This shift saw her experimenting with diverse techniques such as compositing, collage, and video. During her graduate studies, she ventured into photographing abandoned ruins, uncovering in these forsaken structures not a sense of death but a reimagining of life—an enduring existence in another form.
